Contrary to common disbelief, there are some vast differences between the industries of pharmacy and pharmacology. And that key difference is not just that those that enter into the field of pharmacology tend to work at a laboratory, while those that enter the pharmacy profession work at a prescription drug store. One of the main differences between pharmacy and pharmacology is that a pharmacist deals primarily with providing an accurate drug supply to customers, and is highly customer service based, while a pharmacologist deals with the study of the drug itself, and what the drug does to the body. Those that are in the pharmacy field handle the drug after it has been assessed and composed. In pharmacology, it is about the study if deciphering the effects that a drug has on the body.
Those that work in a pharmacy have a different level of responsibility than those that work within the field of pharmacology. Those that work in a pharmacy handle a drug after the composition has been finalized, so the responsibility of a pharmacist primarily deals with the mixing and supplying of a particular drug. A pharmacy is designed to make sure that a patient gets the medicine that he or she is prescribed. What comes along with that duty of a pharmacy is ensuring that the patient gets the proper dosage of the medicine that has been prescribed. A pharmacy will partake of the interaction with the patient directly.
Although the pharmacy industry is highly customer service focused, the field of pharmacology has a large customer driven implication. The study of pharmacology is a way in which drugs are researched in order to find the best options to treat the diseases of patients. Pharmacology is the field in which pharmacologists are responsible for formulating the drugs that pharmacies supply. Although those within the pharmacy industry and the pharmacology industry work close together, it is important to make the distinctions between this cooperative relationship and the individual duties that are held by the two.
